Grind Fresh, Cook Better

Pre-ground spices are convenient. Freshly ground spices are in a different class entirely. A mortar and pestle brings out volatile oils in cumin, coriander, black pepper, and cardamom that evaporate the moment those spices are ground and packaged. It also lets you control the texture — from a coarse crack to a fine powder — in a way that an electric grinder can't match for small quantities. At Tarzian West for Housewares, Brooklyn's neighborhood kitchen store for over 50 years, we carry mortars in marble, cast iron, ceramic, lava stone, and stoneware.

Marble — The Marble Mortar & Pestle for a classic heavy white marble mortar with a smooth bowl — excellent for grinding dry spices, making pesto, and blending pastes. The Slate Marble Mortar and Pestle for a darker marble variant with a rough-textured interior for better grip on whole spices. The White Marble Mortar and Pestle for a polished white marble with a clean, minimal look that doubles as a counter display.

Emile Henry Ceramic — The Emile Henry Mortar & Pestle and Emile Henry Mortar & Pestle, 6.2"/1 qt for Emile Henry's signature ceramic in the same Burgundy clay formulation used for their cookware — durable, non-reactive, and beautiful. The larger 1-qt size is suited for making guacamole, pesto, and salsa in quantity.

Lava Stone (Molcajete) — The Molcajete for a traditional Mexican volcanic stone mortar — the original tool for making guacamole and salsa. The rough porous surface of basalt rock grips ingredients and releases flavor in ways marble and ceramic cannot. Essential for authentic Mexican cooking.

Cast Iron — The Fox Run Cast Iron Mortar and Pestle, 3.5" for a heavy, extremely durable cast iron mortar — excellent for wet and dry grinding, and essentially indestructible.

Specialty — The AdHoc Rocking Mortar Rocca for a rocking-style mortar that rolls the pestle with a curved handle — an ergonomic approach to grinding. The AdHoc Mortar Pestle Camo for a camo-finish version.

Japanese Style — The Helen's Asian Kitchen Suribachi Set for a Japanese ceramic suribachi grinding bowl with ridged interior walls — the traditional tool for grinding sesame seeds, miso, and tofu in Japanese cooking.

Dual Function — The Mini Vase Grinder for a small countertop grinder. The Porcelain Mortar & Grater for a porcelain bowl that works both as a mortar and a grater for garlic and ginger.
